About Hakomi

The Hakomi Method of Experiential Psychotherapy is a body-centered and mindfulness-based psychotherapy first developed by Ron Kurtz. Hakomi is a "core level" therapy which seeks to shift the deep way we experience ourselves and the world around us, freeing us to more fully be ourselves and be in relationship. By working at the core with the habitual, automatic, and often unconscious beliefs we have about our experience, we can change our relationship to not only one particular issue, but all the issues in our life that are affected by those "core beliefs".

Hakomi is grounded in five principles:
Mindfulness  –  Slowing down and bringing attention to our present moment experience – our immediate thoughts, feelings,
and body sensations – helps us discover and explore core beliefs.
Non-violence  –  By understanding and supporting "defenses" – the automatic ways we protect ourselves – we allow them to
gently and willingly yield and be reintegrated, creating change without force.
Mind-Body Integration  –  Because mind and body influence and interact with each other, working with our felt-sense body
experience and its stored meaning allows us to identify and work with core beliefs.
Unity  –  Greater wholeness comes from recognizing all of the parts of ourselves and all of our connections to other people.
Organicity  –  With help and compassionate support, we can reconnect with our natural tendency towards healing and growth.

Working within a relationship of compassionate care and respect, Hakomi helps us stay in the present moment with our direct felt-sense experience of a particular issue. Mindfulness and simple experiential ways of relating to our present moment experience are used to drop below the surface of the particular issue and discover the core beliefs that are automatically and habitually shaping our deep experience of ourselves and the world. In a spirit of cooperative curiosity, we study and understand these core beliefs and the way they are always influencing our perceptions, reactions, and behaviors. Opportunities are created to have new experiences that transform our limiting and restrictive core beliefs, changing how we perceive and relate to ourselves and others, and thus creating more freedom and wholeness in our life.
